Why Visual?

inVisio was founded in 2007 to bring together a number of ‘pockets’ of research interest in visuality and organization. Contemporary organizations and their stakeholders (in the developed world, at least) exist in a mass-mediated, image-saturated society where aesthetic appeal is an increasingly important arbiter of economic value (Bohme 2003). These cultural conditions mean that visual matters are likely to be significant in corporate life and the lives of organizational members in work and everyday settings. Dramatic (and continuing) developments in technology have further fore-grounded the visual with websites an increasingly necessary feature of all organizations and all stakeholders in the business world, whether directors, employees, bankers, lawyers, accountants, fund managers and so on, are, often unwittingly, increasingly susceptible to the power of the visual. Yet organization studies remains strangely ‘blind’ to the import and potential of visual studies of organizational life (Strangleman 2004).
