Caroline Scarles

Institution: University of Surrey

Subject Area: Tourism

My key interests lie in the visual in tourism. In particular, I am intrigued by the embodied visualities and visual interstices of the tourist experience. My work has concentrated on reconceptualising the visual as a series of multisensual practices and performances. In the past I have researched image construction in marketing and advertising, the ways in which tourists use photographs to experience destinations as well as the impacts of tourist photography on host communities. My interest also extends to visual methodologies, in particular photo elicitation and visual autoethnography.
