Seeing Organizations – Understanding Organizations?

Visual images are different and special. They seem to be a gestalt, a form, a figure that can circulate across media. As a management consultant and academic I have been experimenting with the special qualities of images in organizational contexts. Using one way cameras I have encouraged executives to visually explore their everyday organization.

In this presentation I will discuss how these snapshots can be used to catalyze organizational analysis and change. The central argument is that image processes are at the core of what Karl Weick coined the sensemaking in organizations: How can I know what I think until we see what I say? How can they know what I think until I see what I say?
