Paolo Quattrone published a paper on how early accounting practices were driven by the visual forms of the tables/ figures in accounting books? I think the reference is under the &#039;accounting&#039; tab of this site. 
Also there is a paper on symmetry in diagrams in management textbooks by Niina Kouvinen (2006) in Consumption, Markets, Culture.
